Great improvement September 7, 2010 M. R. Pitts-campbell We've used a FoodSaver (reconditioned Vac 550) regularly for years and finally put it out of its misery last week. We had trepidations about buying the V2240 after reading all the rave reviews for the V2840 and the problems others have had with the V2240 but cost was the deciding factor: we could have purchased two V2240's at the local Kroger affiliate for the price of the V2840 and still have $30 left over. We're very glad we did.
The improvements over our Vac 550 are drastic, starting with putting the vacuum hole on the TOP of the spill tray instead of the bottom (that was the final straw for the old one). The heat-sealing band is is broader, which should promote better seals, the "hands-free" operation is actually such, the vacuum cycle can be interrupted so as to not crush more delicate items, when using rolls you no longer have to draw a vacuum to create one end of a bag, and it seals reused bags with far more aplomb than the old one.
We bought it on Thursday, sealed 25# of meat on Friday and 30# on Saturday and never hit the point at which the sealer shuts down to allow the heating element to cool. The amount of wasted bag above the seal seems to be the same as ever (you can learn to minimize it) and, with the ability to manually heat-seal the other end of the bag, you actually use (fractionally) less material. As others have said, do not waste your money purchasing pre-made FoodSaver bags: purchase rolls and make your own because it is so much simpler on this machine. We have not yet had the opportunity to try the two different levels of sealing for dry/moist foods (we partially freeze moist meats before sealing). Meats sealed and kept in the deep freeze have proven good two or three years later; hard cheeses sealed and frozen seem to have almost an indefinite lifespan. If you want to seal liquid products, don't use bags, use the canister attachment and a FoodSaver container or a Mason jar.
Not what I expected ffor a FoodSaver Product August 28, 2010 Jean R. Puckett (Laurel, Md USA) I've owned and been happy with FoodSaver Products (at least 4 different ones) for 20+ years. I bought the V2240 because I needed another one since I gave my old one away, that was a big mistake!! As some others have said it stops working and needs to cool off for 10 - 15 minutes after only 5 attempts to seal a bag (customer service said it does this after 8 - 10 seal attemps). I quess this is a performs as intended feature now (previous ones I could do the 10 - 15 bag sealing without any problems).
As to the foodsaver bags (premade) don't waste your time or money, but buy the roll and make your own. I do recommend that you double seal though. I've had problems where the seal would get gaps, which let the air in causing to you have to cut below the seal line and reseal.
Will not vacuum seal foods with liquids August 20, 2010 slynn 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Food Saver works fine on dry or nearly dry foods. Foods with liquids in it such as chili or soups will not vacuum seal. The vacuum pulls the liquids into the machine and the machine will not seal.
Great Product August 15, 2010 countrygirl878 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am very pleased with this product. I checked the reviews on many food sealing products before buying this one. This product is easy to use and easy to store. The bags are sealed completely with absolutely no air left. This product will be used often in our home and I have no doubt that it will help us save money by having less food wasted.
Satisfactory only for light use! August 14, 2010 G. Yoshida (riverside, ca) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is my second Foodsaver device and about as satisfactory as my 200 dollar stainless, upright model that died on me after 2 years of fairly light use. I purchase bulk items on a monthly basis and so the vacuum sealer really is a must. One thing about the 2240 is that you can only bag about 12 items at a time before the machine becomes finicky and will not seal. Evidently, the heating element becomes too hot and the machine will not operate after much more than 12 sealing operations. For me this is okay as i rarely need to seal more bags than that at a time, but it can be problematic for larger families or people who portion out their bulk meats in smaller batches. As I purchased a ton of plastic for this contraption, i decided to purchase another Foodsaver as i read that each sealing device uses proprietary bagging and one type of bag usually will not work on a machine it was not intended for. The next time I will try the Deni which has been given better reviews for the higher end models. Short of shelling out hundreds of dollars for a commercial sealer, figure on replacing your Foodsaver every 24 - 36 months or so. Thank you, Foodsaver for proving that "controlled obsolescence"is still alive and well in the manufacturing sector!
